Genesis
Agni Raksha’s mission is to ensure that no poor burn victim is deprived of burn treatment due to poverty and to serve him or her in all possible ways. Agni Raksha also symbolizes the gratitude felt by its founders, the Dhanraj family, whose eldest daughter, Dr. Prema Dhanraj, successfully recovered from a domestic fire accident, after long years of treatment. Against all odds, Dr. Prema Dhanraj went on to study medicine and become a plastic surgeon. Agni Raksha is the honouring of a promise made by the Dhanraj siblings in the memory of their parents, along with the support of well-wishers.
Initiated in 1999, and registered in 2002, Agni Raksha’s Managing Trustee, Chitra Dhananjay, who is Dr. Prema Dhanraj’s younger sister, sees in every burn victim the suffering that her own family went through. This personal experience makes Agni Raksha stand apart in a league of its own as its founders have undergone the pain felt by burn victims and their families. Agni Raksha’s service is, therefore, marked with a sensitivity which makes burn treatment less traumatic, and at the same time more comprehensive than that given by other medical care providers.
Based in Bangalore, Agni Raksha is the only known Not-For-Profit Organization (NPO) of its kind in India which provides burn victims, mostly women and children from poor families, not just integrated medical and para medical treatment, but also counselling, home based care, physiotherapy, and opportunities for socio-economic rehabilitation, where applicable. mic rehabilitation, where applicable.
